The Myths of Military Progress
The More Things Appear to Change, the More They Don't
By Ron Jacobs
11/29/07 "Counterpunch" -- - Making occupation and calling it peace. Killing fewer and calling it progress. Rotating troops and calling it a withdrawal. Setting up new death squads and calling them allies. Lowering standards and calling it opening new opportunities.
All of the above phenomena seem to be part of the current campaign by Washington in Iraq. There are fewer GI deaths in the country now because they don't leave the bases. Why? Because their latest allies-tribesmen paid in cold cash to kill for DC-are doing the killing and taking the hits. Indeed, some of the most fatal of those hits come from US air strikes that "mistakenly" bomb the men involved in killing the US bogeyman Al Queda in Mesopotamia, which may or may not be a phantom reality. Meanwhile, these tribesmen learn US military methods and locations while stockpiling US-supplied weaponry for some future war on their Shi'a opposites or perhaps even the same US forces they currently align themselves with.
The politicians here in the US, meanwhile, continue their cynical dealing in human life by refusing to insist on a genuine withdrawal timetable even as they steal billions from their country men and women to fight their wars and try to maintain the empire. False arguments erupt over withdrawal bills that aren't withdrawal bills because the White House insists that it has complete control over the war and its conduct while the opposition in Congress writes legislation that has more holes than a hooker's torn fishnets. Despite the impotence of the legislation, they fail to pass even that and end up giving the White house every penny it originally asked for. Wait until the election, says the opposition. Things will change then. If previous elections are any indication, the only thing that will change are the faces in the White House. Troops will remain in Iraq and the occupation/war will continue its haphazard road to control of the oilfields. Or, it will result in the defeat of Washington's plans for the region, no matter which politician sits in the Oval Office.
``We're going to fund the troops,'' Levin, a Michigan Democrat, said today (11/25/07) on the ``Fox News Sunday'' program. ``No one's trying to undercut the military.'' The subtext of this quote is simply this. No one is going to undercut the wars. After all, it is the military that fights the wars, is it not? It's hard for students of history to believe, but there was a time in the history of this nation when the military was not the untouchable institution it has become. Indeed, there was a brief shining moment when it was purely a defensive force. Unfortunately, that time was not only brief, it was also quite long ago. There has been no time in US history, however, when the military has dominated the American polity like it has since the United States entered World War Two. This domination of the political sphere is why no politician who wants to stay in power will ever defund the Pentagon and the complex it has spawned. This situation exists not necessarily because the US public wants most of their tax monies going to corporations that build weapons or to maintain an imperial army. It exists because the propaganda wing of the aforementioned complex can and will destroy the career of any politician that attacks that complex. Consequently, the number of national politicians in the two major parties fundamentally opposed to the Pentagon's sacrosanct position in US politics can be counted on one hand. Not only does fear guide these spineless men and women, but so do the dollars tossed their way by the very corporations that profit as members of the previously mentioned complex. Our silence, fed by fears that are by definition unreal allows them to get away with what can only be truthfully called murder.
Back to Iraq and Afghanistan. Violence in those countries ebbs and flows, reflecting a rhythm of death and destruction known only to the beast of war. Some children lose their parents while other parents lose their children to that beast. The dollars we pay in taxes every day feed the beast's greed despite the outspoken desire of what seems to be the majority that they be used for peaceful purposes. Perhaps the structures we allow to rule can no longer spend that money for peace. Perhaps they are too corrupted by war and its profits. Perhaps their long service to the beast of war has rendered them not incapable of conceiving a world where peace does not mean domination and does not require war in a fruitless effort to secure said peace.
It is only natural that those who are subject to this domination would resist. That resistance takes up arms only because to do otherwise is suicide. Why should one commit suicide when they are being murdered? When this is the scenario, then armed resistance become self-defense and doing nothing is defeat. If this is so, the question is raised once again: are those tribesmen currently working with the occupier in Iraq and Afghanistan merely pretending to collaborate so as to strike the final blow to the occupier when the guard is down? Wasn't this the strategy of anti-occupation forces of Muqtada al-Sadr (labeled Shi'a by the western press)? And aren't those forces now in the gunsights of the US military?
Meanwhile, the government in Baghdad's Green Zone is asking the US military to commit to a longterm agreement to stay in Iraq in substantial numbers. Besides the obvious fact that the Green Zone government really has no say in how long the US military occupies Iraq, the fact that those in power are asking the military to remain is an acknowledgement that their power does not come from the Iraqi people but from the military power of Washington. In fact, according to the November 26, 2007 Associated Press story discussing this "request" by the Green Zone government, the request was made because "Iraq's government, (is) seeking protection against foreign threats and internal coups." One can be certain that those internal coups most likely refer to Washington's fear of a victorious insurgency. Tellingly, opposition to the "request" was voiced by the supporters of Muqtada al-Sadr, who opposes the US occupation in all its manifestations. The more things appear to change, the more they don't. The casualties continue to mount, even when they are not part of the equation.

Klein: In War on Terror, Are You Next?
by Shaunna Murphy
You shouldn’t be sure you’ll never end up in a damp, tiny cell in Guantanamo Bay, said best-selling author Naomi Klein to the NYU students and faculty gathered last night in Hemmerdinger Hall.
“We think we don’t fit the profile,” she said. “If we feel safe, we are banking on the racism of our government.”
Klein, author of current New York Times bestseller “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism,” visited the Silver Center last night to participate in the panel “Torture and Democracy,” along with Lisa Hajjar, chair of the law and society program at the University of California at Santa Barbara and author of “Courting Conflict: The Israeli Military Court System in the West Bank and Gaza.”
“We’re here to talk about the relationship between torture and democracy,” Klein said. “The thesis of the book is that the central claim of our time that the free market and democracy go hand in hand is a fairy tale.”
Klein made it clear that her definition of democracy is not a country that holds elections, but a nation that values human rights and civil liberties that are being stripped away by the use of torture as a “crude tool of coercion.” She finds that shock coupled with torture is being used to scare both individuals, largely in Guantanamo, and mass publics into submission.
“Torture is always public,” she said. “In order for you to be scared, you have to know it’s going on.”
Hajjar spoke of the relationship between torture and law, and agreed with Klein that the government’s acceptance of torture can break down entire nations.
“Torture produces false information, breaks a society and leads to mass imprisonment,” she said. “You torture people, they confess and you can say you caught a terrorist. Torture doesn’t produce truth; the ticking time bomb notion is ridiculous - ‘24′ notwithstanding.”
Though the common consensus across the panel was that the current situation in the United States is bleak, Klein offered some positive advice for improvement.
“Just like torture sends individuals into shock, events like Sept. 11 send whole societies into shock,” she said. “They lose their narrative. We need to start telling stories of why terror is happening.”

Dear President Bush,
What would you do if you were given 300 million dollars to spend everyday? Ignite cultural chaos? Promote religious murder? Uproot families and neighborhoods? Create a situation that results in the killing of thousands of innocent civilians? Of course not, unless you had backed yourself into a corner of mistakes, poor judgments, and inflexible ideology.
As the tragedies of the war in Iraq are reaching appalling proportions, so is the cost for our economy and our environment. Rather than pumping money into an unfounded war, it is time to invest in a sustainable future. As we move forward in the twenty-first century, we must look toward a new way to get our energy. The levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and consequently the earth's temperature, have been steadily increasing in recent decades. The latest IPCC report concludes that human activity is the primary cause of this current warming. The continued climate change will potentially alter ecosystems, trigger glacial melts, and redirect ocean currents, increasing the frequency of extreme weather events and causing a rise in sea level. Our society's dependence on fossil fuels has left us on a brink of a global climate disaster. We need a renewable energy source that can be domestically produced without the environmental degradation of oil extraction. Biodiesel, a renewable fuel produced from vegetable oils, can be used in diesel engines and oil-fired home heating systems with only minor modifications. These fuels are biodegradable, nontoxic, and support our domestic economy. Producing our own domestic fuel reduces our dependence on foreign oil, enhancing our national security. If we no longer need to occupy foreign countries in order to gain control of oil resources, we can spend our money on research for new fuels that are not only renewable, but also more energy-efficient than current systems. We will be saving the average consumer money off their home heating bills and the price of gasoline as well as supporting a cleaner, more economical future.
As the leader of our country you should be guiding the way towards an energy-efficient future. Encourage people to carpool to work or use public transportation. Promote hybrid cars and encourage drivers to pump up their tires. If everyone inflated their car tires to the proper pressure, we would save more oil in fuel efficiency than is available in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge. Increase rebates for buying energy-efficient appliances and encourage people to hit the switch and conserve electricity. While these are all attainable goals, there are some issues that can only be tackled through our government, through you. We are one of two countries that have yet to ratify the Kyoto Protocol even though we are the single largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world. You continue to assert that placing restrictions on car emissions would hurt our economy, but the rest of the world, including China, has placed strict restrictions on car manufacturers. Recent proposals that advocate drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and off the coast of Florida are not the answers to our energy crisis. It is your job and your responsibility to help us kick our "addiction to oil." Renewable energy, sustainable peace. Sincerely, Ben Dudek

Dear Mr. President, This is the Lord speaking. You have a monkey on your back. End the war, get that monkey off of you and put it on a train. Your people are God fearing people, they will understand. If anyone questions you tell them my God told me to end it. I've got your back. Be strong. Keep your faith. Oh, one other thing if you don't there will be 14 hurricanes hit the U.S. this year. I don't want to see that happen.

Dear Mr. President, What on God's Green Earth were you thinking? You sent all those men and women off to die and fight in a war that many, many people (including soldiers) were (and still) are not even clear on what exact reason it was being fought. First it was 911, then that became very apparent that this was not the case. There were no vile weapons to be found over 'there'. So many people on either side have perished because of you, are you really that treacherous human being so many think you are? You just recently sent 20,000 more troops off to war in Iraq; I guess you figured a few more dead wouldn't matter? Why stop now? Watching you on screen delivering your so wonderfully eloquent speeches, wow! Maya Angelou should take meetings with you. It appears to me that you are a badly designed robot, possibly from the small town of Stepford? You are about as abysmal as The Stepford Wives re-make, and that's pretty bad. Your opinions on gay people are quite revolting, I guess you probably hope that the soldiers that die in Iraq are gay or lesbian right? You want to withhold the basic Human rights from homosexuals, you wish to ban the basic rights of homosexuals to be more exact. But, I gotta tell you, gay marriage and civil unions are becoming increasingly available all over the world. And I am sure (due to your limited amount of programming) you have not realized that eventually, in good time, everyone in America will have that ‘basic right’ to become married. There is nothing you can do to stop this. So, go ahead 'what goes around comes around'. And it seems to me that you have a lot that is 'gonna be comin' around.' God! That sounds like the title of a Dixie Chick’s song, speaking of them you never did give me back my Dixie Chicks CD I let you borrow. What's up! Michael

Dear President Bush, I'm embarrassed to be an American. I want to thank you for putting me in this position. With your vague sense of reality and your deception, you've taken our country off the deep end. As the father of a disabled vet and the father-in-law of an active member of our Armed Forces. I feel as if my family has invested enough in your so-called "war on terror.'' Speaking to my daughter on the phone this evening, she stated that, "most of her firends in the military don't want to be in Iraq, but it's their job." Even now, disabled and facing pending brain surgery , she's hesitant to say anything bad about "her Commander-in-Chief.'' Thank goodness, myself and the majority of the American people are not as young and naive as she and her friends are. President Bush, you are a dissgrace to the office you now hold. It's time to man-up and admit the mistakes you've made. Bring our young people home to be with the families that LOve and need them. If you're not mature and educated enough to do that, than do us all a favor and throw yourself on your sword. Sacrificing your life is certainly worth the lives of thousands of others that you're willing to sacrifice in the name of "saving face.'' Sincerely, Mike MacDevitt ps my daughter & son-in-law do not agree with me composing or sending this letter--but I LOve them none-the-less.

George W. Bush: Hi! So, how's the presidency gig working out for you? It seems like you've kind of fucked it up a little bit, huh? I suppose it's OK because, after all, it's only human to make mistakes. It's just that most people I know tend to learn from their mistakes and make some changes. Oh well, some of us need longer to learn than others.
You probably already know that there are a lot of humans out here that are exceedingly angry with you and your administration. We're angry for a lot of reasons, too. By now, though, we recognize that you don't particularly care what we think about just about anything. By the way, that makes us feel angry, too. But who am I kidding? It has become very clear that you and your gang are driven by what you can control and you have no intention of really listening to public opinion. Still, you must be feeling a little sting from the whole 30% approval-rating thing. I have to tell you, it feels fantastic to be part of the 70% disapproving majority. It's been a long six years I've been waiting for that feeling!
But I digress. Yes it's true; you and I live very different realities and have very different motivations. Instead of telling you off, instead of trying to shame you, instead of begging you to please just come to your senses, I'd like to simply remind you about the power of choice. We've seen your choices to use your power in ways that must make sense to you (or at least to someone you know), even when the rest of the world pleads and rationalizes in the opposite direction. Luckily, we little people of the United States are still blessed with the opportunity to choose and decide for ourselves. That's right, we are the deciders, too.
And so, I know I am not alone when I say to you that my choice is to live a life that rejects greed, war, revenge, lies and hate. Instead, when the daily cruelties of this world present themselves, I choose to manage them using peace, love, and tolerance. This choice means I must first let go of anger and blame; then I must accept the fact that we all suffer, and resolve to continue living with positivity and love in my heart. The real challenge is to love and believe in people who try their damnedest to make it as difficult as possible. Man, you think being president is hard? Try practicing tolerance sometime! No really, I think you should try it. You might notice, as I have, that people around you will like it and start making similar choices in their own lives, too. Maybe I'm putting you off with my hippie talk, though. I believe there is another word that describes this method of getting along with our species. It's called diplomacy. Maybe it's time to bring some of that back into our government.
What can I say, George. Your presidency has been a real struggle for everyone to live through, but maybe it's not too late to for you to start making different choices. How else do we get started on solving all the problems we face as a global community if not by at least trying a little compassion? The way I see it, the only chance for the survival of humanity is if we stop 'otherizing' and start recognizing that we are all One. If we could put just a little effort into to accepting our vast differences rather than continuing a cycle of paranoia and ignorance, perhaps then we can actually begin to save the world. As president of the United States, you have the unique opportunity and profound responsibility to be an example and help speed up the process! Unfortunately, you have not lived up to our expectations; and, quite frankly, it really sucks.
Mother Teresa once said, "Do not wait for the leaders. Do it alone. Person to person." With that in mind, I do not wait for the leaders to start acting like they care. I choose peace. I choose love. I choose tolerance.
Love, Rita

Dear George Bush, I knew of you when I was little you were my governor then. I looked up at you with my bright blue eyes and thought "Wow, I wish I was somebody as important as him." Now that I look back on it I realize how young and how innocent my mind was. You my old friend are nothing like my idol nor are you as important as you were.
I'm sorry but the way this world has come to be, I more than half way blame it on you. Ah, yes, the other presidents did their share but you, Sir, if I should even call you that have served us almost 8 years and have only dug us into a deeper darker hole. There are starving people everywhere, and children without parents. Children crying and plants dying all across this nation.
Man, if I could give you an award it would be for carelessness. Why? Because the world is wasting away. We have millions of dollars going to the famous and spoiled but how much do we have going across seas. And NO I do not mean the war! You are making things worse by sending these soldiers over to Iraq. No wonder these people dislike America (most of what we have shown them is hate). If I had the money I'd go to other countries I'd help every person I possibly could.
I don't like sitting here pointing out your wrongs but when the world has become this bad I feel that I need to take it into my own hands. This letter will go to you and all you will say is "another damn hippie trying to save the day". Hopefully I'm dreaming and you will accept it with open arms but the reality of it is another tree will be wasted away. You say "illegals" coming from other countries are a problem but they are just people like you and me searching for something better. Well maybe their life would be better if we helped them out. Either by letting them stay here as a friend and as family or giving them the life they always dreamed about in the comfort of their own home. How can you look at the sick and poor and brush it off like dust on your shoulder? How can you build a bomb shelter for you and only a few others letting the rest just shrivel up and die? How far are you going to take it? One thing I can assure you "Mr. President" is you can't take it that much further until the whole world and its future is messed up and changed forever. Oh wait, I'm sorry? That has already happened. I see people dressing and acting the same. It's like we are robots playing your silly little game. How about you look around and actually see the pollution, the hungry and the people in pain suffering from lack of help and care. Most people think a gold ring is more important than an ill dying child whom they have never met. If asked about it they would say "nonsense I would help that child in a heartbeat" but the truth is they just bought an expensive piece of jewelry a week ago the thought never crossed their mind. We can give more to others and care less about ourselves. Every day this happens and every day the world gets worse. So help me change these peoples mind about poverty and about them selves. Help the world a little more and I can assure you more smiles will appear.
Thank you for your time and even though this seems sarcastic I mean it from the bottom of my heart; I hope you have a wonderful day Mr. Bush.
Sincerely, Maddie

America lost a great woman who had a very powerful idea. This idea was simple; Rosa Parks would not go to the back of the bus because her feet were tired.
Today in this part of the world, there is a President who’s telling us all to sit at the back of the bus. He’s telling working people, single moms, Aboriginals, Arabs, Afghanis, Africans… he’s telling us all good peace-loving people to sit at the back of the bus.
If you’re not motivated by greed, racism and making war, you can’t ride at the front with the big boys.
Well, Mr. President, today we want to tell you that we’re all getting off you’re stupid bus. We don’t need you as our driver; we don’t need anyone to drive at all, because we’re gonna be out on the street and walking together.
And when you come around the corner, watch out! Because there’s gonna be one hell of a road block!
Mathieu

Mr. President Why is it so hard for you to hear us? We say it every day, bring our people home- fix our nation here. Our shelters are full and we were turned away. I wonder if your children ever went hungry? Have you ever had to explain that you don't have enough $ for them? No because our blood =your money. You've had Saddam hung and given the bin Ladens a free trip home We know their money lines your pocket... You think we don't know, that we are brainwashed- asleep but not all of us are and we are spreading the word...no fighting for peace

Dear Mr. President Let me start by saying that I do not consider you a bad man. I think a lot of this started because you saw people hurting. Using our tears to fuel a war machine, uniting helpless people against a common, distant enemy and putting a face to our attackers may have seemed the right thing to do, but vengeance has no place in the solution. Adding hundreds of thousands of families to the list of those who lost loved ones does not either. People can easily say that things were worse before, but at least then, you knew who your enemies were. You could live in your home with water and electricity. You could walk the streets without choruses of gunshots and bombs. I cannot imagine rocking a baby to sleep in the dark night, silence broken by explosions only to know that the next day would be more of the same thing. I wish I knew what the solution was. I realize that it is a difficult situation to get out of, but liberating a people should ultimately end with giving them back control of their lives and land. I do not think that adding more lives to those that have been lost is the answer. Let's empower, not belittle. Let's educate instead of oppress. But war is never simple. What I do know is that we as a nation cannot continue on the path we are on. There must be changes for our children and our children's children. You have been in office for six years, what legacy do you see yourself leaving? Besides the "Quotable president" calendars and posters, the grammatical errors, and cultural faux pas- what will people remember you by?
Right now is a critical time for the earth. It seems to me that maybe, instead of spending billions on making live worse - there are ways to make lives better.
If the Federal Government could subsidize American automakers production of hybrid vehicles, there would be a multi-pronged effect: those of us who would like to stop being part of the problem, but lack resources, could cut consumption and be part of the solution.- Manufacturing jobs would come back to the US where there are labor laws and unions that ensure we are not supporting the exploitation of those that are not so blessed- We would cut the pollution of the world's water by reducing the transportation of foreign goods- American's could be proud of their contributions to this global problem and the world could see us making an effort.
I realize that you have some buddies who might not be happy with this, but it doesn't seem like popularity is very important to you.
It just seems to me that the billions of dollars you have requested to continue this war that the majority of Americans do not support could be spent in more popular ways. TV told me that for the price of a cup of coffee a day, you could feed a child. At today's coffee prices, that might be a little steep, but it has to be better than what we are spending on killing. I don't know who pays the electric bill at the White House. I know mine last month was $330. I live pretty frugally and I realized that I am spending over $10 a day on electricity (more than a cup of coffee) and I don't even get to spend much of my time at my house. In the morning, I have to drop my child off with someone else so I can go to work, pay for car insurance, health insurance, electricity, water, taxes and someone to take care of my child so I can go to work to pay for car insurance, health insurance... etc. If I could do some simple upgrades on my house, I am pretty sure I could cut that bill significantly, but my credit is shot and I don't have the means for the initial investment. Seems like a low interest (or no interest... HA HA, just kidding on that one) loan could be paid back with the money that I could save on my bills. Of course, I guess no one would make any money off of that plan...
The other thing that I don't understand is how my husband, who has worked his entire life for his family business laid in bed on Christmas day 2 years ago, in crippling pain, afraid to go the hospital because he lacked insurance. Have you ever felt that way, sir? When your daughters were little girls, did they ask Laura why daddy wouldn't be able to eat dinner with them? It's a horrible, helpless feeling to work your whole life and not be able to afford medicine. You will be happy to know that I left a job that I loved for one with affordable health insurance for my family. Anyway just a thought... I digress. In closing, thank you for your time. I feel a lot better having gotten some of this off of my chest. It's never too late to make a change for the better. Sincerely, A thinking citizen
